There is an app for that. But really, an app that can divide by zero?

The other day in the office we were demoing Quixey when a friend asked, “If Quixey is so cool, can it find a calculator that can divide by zero?” Of course we all laughed, because as much as we believe in Quixey, we don’t expect it to do the impossible. But just for fun we Quixied, “calculator that can divide by zero.” Sure enough, Quixey found a calculator that claims to divide by zero.

Obviously this calculator does not actually divide by zero, but instead of saying “error” when you try, it gives you a joke message. For example, “you divided by zero and a Canadian dwarf cut off both legs due to the mis-reading of a tiramisu recipe.”

So back to our friend’s original question: “If Quixey is so cool, can it find a calculator that can divide by zero?” Yes, Quixey is that cool.

Ultimately this story only goes to prove one thing- if you want an app for something try searching Quixey. We highly doubted that someone had made a calculator that could divide by zero, but we tried searching for it and we found it. So as we like to say, anytime you think-“there must be an app for that,” we challenge you to Quixey it.

We are constantly surprised by how many great apps exist, and with Quixey, they’re all just one search away.

Why Quixey’s Functional Search Is a Reason to Get Excited About Apps

Today I wanted to upload screenshots to a site that only accepted .jpg images. First things first, I needed to convert my screenshots to .jpgs. Naturally, I went to Quixey because I was trying to complete a task. I Quixied “convert screenshot to jpg” and I was pleased to find not only did I have lots of options, but I had options on multiple platforms. See below:

I then selected Mac as my platform and I found DropJPG. This app made my day, I have been using it non-stop. It is a easy and simple way to get the job done. All you have to do is drag and drop your image file onto the DropJPG desktop icon and it automatically duplicates your screenshot as a .jpg file.

It is moments like these when I am thankful for Quixey. Apps are tools designed to make your life easier, and there is an app for almost everything. But apps are only useful if you can find them- and you have to be able to find them on the platforms you use. Every time you think, “Oh there must be an app for that,” I challenge you to try Quixey, because I bet that there is an app for that.

Just to demonstrate why functional search is necessary for the app world, I tested my search query in a content search engine. Here were the results:

With content search, I have to sift through lots of content. Most of it doesn’t help me and none of it completes my task for me. With functional search, I don’t have to read about how to do something, I can just find the apps that do what I want.

So once again, I challenge you: Next time you need help doing something- try Quixey. I think you’ll find it makes your life a lot easier.

Welcome to the the world of apps, it is a great place to be.

VentureBeat predicts major app growth in 2011

Venturebeat today release an article about the top 10 technology trends of 2011.

Takahashi predicts apps will spread everywhere and across platforms. With this growth, Takahashi argues that “we will need something to manage them. Discovering the right app is still going to be a tough problem, as no one has come up with the equivalent of search, which solved the problem of navigating through millions of web sites”.

What do you think is one of the toughest challenges in connecting people with apps?
